The picture of Uncle Ray in a hunting field with his dog brings back my most precious memories of our time together hunting almost every weekend when I was growing up as a young teenager in New Albany. He taught me how to hunt quail over his dogs oftentimes in Fredericksburg, IN. We had such great times together hunting. I was totally elated when he asked me to go with him to hunt pheasants in Nebraska even though the plane's engine died a couple of times on the way out that my pilot Uncle attributed to some sort of "icing". The dog salivating in my lap and I looked at each other thinking this was the end until Uncle Ray got the engine restarted and laughed the whole thing off. I'm still not certain how far we fell with no running engine, but it seemed like forever at the time. I had total respect for Uncle Ray's honest and direct response to everything he encountered - he never mixed words, a trait I admire to this day. Thank you Uncle Ray for the bright spots you put in my early life and for teaching me the importance of honesty I carry with me today as an adult - I am forever grateful!!!

I met Ray 30 years ago and when I was doing grading work for him. We became friends almost instantly, but most importantly he became my mentor. His flying stories intrigued me and he encouraged me to become a private pilot. He would quiz me on my aviation knowledge to help me to continue to learn. His knowledge of the stock market was vast and he was always giving me ideas. The stories he shared with me while hunting or fishing always seemed so far fetched but ultimately would be validated. One day when I was going home from work I noticed his truck pulled over at the corner of Church St and Madison Ave. I realized he was up 20ft in the top of a wild cherry tree trying to knock the cherries out for his wine production. I pulled over and asked him if he had permission, he said he figured if they didn't want him there they would ask him to leave!
I am grateful for the times we shared together and the laughs we had.
