OBITUARY

Nettie LaVerne Odom, age 91, of Jersey, passed away on April 14, 2025. LaVerne was born in Loganville, Georgia at her grandparent’s home on December 14, 1933, to the late Ada Effie Ray Stephenson and the late Charlie Jefferson Stephenson. Mrs. Odom was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Odom; grandson, David Deluca; brothers Charlie Stephenson, Carl Stephenson, and Larry Stephenson.

Surviving members of her family are daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and David Howard, Judy and Wayne Brown, Bonnie and George Smith; sons and daughters-in-law, Norris and Nancy Robin Moon, James and Devi Moon, Joey and Deborah Odom; sister and brother-in-law, Nellie and Billy Hardy; brother, Lamar Stephenson; twenty grandchildren, thirty-three great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

She was a long-time member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church. She loved Jesus and wanted to make sure others knew about Him too. LaVerne and her husband, Joe of 64 years, would pick up kids in the neighborhood and take them to church. She also directed a Christmas play one year. She worked full time at Lithonia Lighting for over 50 years and had so many friends there.

She loved dancing, crocheting and crafting. She shared her crafts with many.

She loved her home and sharing it with others. She had many family gatherings for every occasion and always had room for anyone with no place to go. She was the “glue” that held us all together and because of that the cousins really knew each other. She was a giver and would buy for those in need. She always pulled for the underdog. And if you were sick, she would be right there taking care of you.  She was small but mighty!

A visitation will be held on Monday, April 21, 2025, from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Meadows Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 28, 2025, at 11:00 am in the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Allen Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Cornish Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery in Oxford, Georgia.
