OBITUARY

James Donald Culpepper, age 63, of Monroe, passed away on February 11, 2025. Don was born on June 11, 1961, to Barbara Moore Culpepper and Jack Culpepper. Surviving members of Don's family include his parents; his loving wife of 37 years, Kathy Malcom Culpepper; daughters: Haley Culpepper and McKenzie Culpepper; and brother, Doug Culpepper (Glenda). He is also survived by many extended family members who adored and cherished the years they spent together.

Don attended schools in Monroe throughout his lifetime and was a Monroe Area alumni, graduating in 1979 where he developed a strong work ethic and a genuine love for his community. He went on to attend some college and join the United States Army before receiving an honorable discharge after an injury. Upon returning to Monroe, Don began a fulfilling career serving others as a Dekalb County Fireman. Throughout his journey with the Fire Department, Don trained and was accepted into various leadership roles and specialty groups including the Hazmat and Technical Rescue teams. During his 23-year fire career, he received numerous awards and accolades honoring his outstanding commitment, dedication, and contributions to serving the community before taking a medical retirement in 2005. Don had an entrepreneurial spirit and served as a contractor for many homes throughout Walton County. Together with his father and brother, he served as a co-owner of D&D Auto Sales in Monroe for many years before his retirement.

As a loving husband and devoted father, Don served as a constant pillar of strength and support to those around him throughout his life. His family and friends could always seek him out for guidance, a helping hand, love, or a hearty laugh. He truly cherished the years he had with his family and selflessly placed them at the forefront of every decision he made. Don created a life filled with lasting memories of family vacations, attending community events with Kathy, and supporting his daughters in every endeavor with unwavering love and encouragement. His love for the outdoors was apparent throughout his life. He was an avid fisherman and could frequently be seen spending time on the porch of the bait store in Monroe. His most prized past time was spending time on the lake, whether it be fishing, skiing, or simply riding in the boat on a sunny day. Throughout his lifetime, Don was a shining beacon of light whose presence, infectious laugh, and vibrant smile could bring joy and warmth to any situation.

In late 2024, Don was diagnosed with a glioblastoma and battled his diagnosis with courage, dignity, and grace. Don's memory will live on in the hearts of his family and many throughout the community forever. To celebrate Don's life, we invite you to join his family in honoring him. A visitation will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Meadows Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, February 16, 2025, in the sanctuary of Union Chapel Church at 2:30 pm with Rev. Brian Widmer officiating. Interment will follow at Malcom Cemetery.
