OBITUARY

John Lloyd Griffith, aged 82, of Monroe, Georgia, passed away on January 18th, 2025. He was born on March 27th, 1942, in Aiken, South Carolina, to the late Unis Widener Griffith and the late John Lewis Griffith. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Pallie Janie Hood Griffith; daughters, Cathy Griffith and Jana Griffith; siblings, Allen Griffith, Donald Griffith, and Tina Griffith.

Surviving Mr. Griffith are son, Jeff Griffith (Jennifer), 4 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.

In youth, John gained an education at Social Circle High School. He developed a love for softball and baseball at the Walton Mills in the 1960's. John played across Barrow, Walton, and Newton counties for Ford softball team, eventually playing semipro baseball from ages 19 to 21. In his career, John boasted a batting average of 417, 54 winning games, and maintained the title of Home Run Leader for 2 years. He hit another home run when he met and married his loving wife, Pallie, in 1962. John provided for Pallie and their children while working at Covington Ford as a mechanic for 42 years, landing the accolade of Employee of The Year in 2004. Staying in his love of the ball field, John played an active role as an umpire for the Monroe Little League for 20 years. He became lovingly known as "Big John," and in 1987, had the honor of having a baseball field in Hammond Park named Griffith Field. Big John retired in 2008, at the age of 66. His work did not stop there. A faithful servant of Christ, Big John went on to help his community and his church, helping repair cars, framing homes, and working with Walton County Recycling. In his free time, he raised rabbits and chickens, worked in his garden, and loved watching sports on TV. Big John was a loving husband, father, friend, and an active church member, with his last affiliation being Bible Baptist Church in Monroe, Georgia. A dedicated Christian that put his family first, he will be missed. (Psalm 23; Romans 5:1)

A funeral service will be held at 11:00am Friday, January 24th at Bible Baptist Church in Monroe, Georgia, with Rev. Greg Butler and Rev. Jim McFarlin officiating.
