OBITUARY

Phyllis “Penny” Garland Smith, 76, of Oxford, GA passed away on December 14, 2024. Penny was born on May 19, 1948, in Young Harris, GA to the late Grace Bridges Garland and the late Otis Garland. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her grandparents Andy & Myrtle Bridges, who helped raise her, brothers, Gene “Snooks” Garland, James “Bud” Garland, John Garland, Jack Garland, several infant brothers and sisters, and her infant daughter Jennifer.

Members of her family are loving husband, Harvin Bryant “Pete” Smith; daughter, Suzanne Puckett (Chris); grandchildren, Harrison Puckett, Ashlyn Puckett; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mrs. Smith was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, known for her kindness and willingness to help others. She cared for friends and family during times of need, taking them under her wing. Often, she even welcomed them into her home. She was a role model to many and loved by all. Her warm smile and caring spirit brought comfort to everyone she met, and her home was always a place of welcome and care (and food!). She was a determined and unwavering presence—a true force to be reckoned with. When something needed to be done, she tackled it with resolve and purpose, never shying away from a challenge.

Her greatest joy was her family, and she poured her heart into raising her daughter and cherishing her grandchildren. She never missed a ball game or performance, and her grandchildren were her pride and joy. Whether cooking Sunday dinners, offering a listening ear, or sharing words of wisdom, she exemplified grace and selflessness. Her legacy of love, faith, and strength will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2024 at 3:30 pm in the sanctuary of Alcovy Mountain Baptist Church with the Rev. Hulon Knight officiating. Interment will be held on Friday, December 20, 2024 at 2:00 pm in Blairsville, GA at Bethel Cemetery.
