OBITUARY

Eugene (Gene) Shumate, 90, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2024. The oldest of seven children, Gene was born on February 18, 1934 in Walton County, GA to the late Sara Sanders Shumate and the late Grover Shumate. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Helen Eason and Mary Jo Shumate.

Gene graduated from Social Circle High School in Georgia. He then attended Creighton Business College in Atlanta, GA while also working at Northside Pharmacy in Buckhead, GA. This was the beginning of a wonderful and life-long career for Gene as a Pharmacist Technician for over 45+ years! With a soda fountain in the pharmacy where local business men and women would come for breakfast and lunch each day, Gene was in his element greeting and conversing with everyone.

In 1953, Gene met the love of his life, Mary, while attending Business College; they married in June of 1955 in Monroe, GA. In 1956, Gene began his military service in the United States Army, serving 2 years stationed in California. Following his active duty, Gene served another 4 years as a Reservist. He was honorably discharged from service in 1958. Mary and Gene were blessed with their child, Barry, in 1963.

As a youth, Gene enjoyed cross country and baseball. But his passion for sports only grew over his 90 years! He was a true sports enthusiast with a strong passion for the Atlanta Braves, Georgia Tech Yellowjackets and ALL sports, no matter if little league or professional. In addition to his love of sports, his friends and family were his pride and pleasure!

Gene and his wife Mary attended Shadowbrook Church in Suwanee, GA and enjoyed many friends and fellowship. Together, they were also members of the AT&T Pioneer group with whom they traveled extensively over the years.

Surviving are his loving wife: Mary Shumate; son: Barry Shumate (Kim); grandchildren: Morgan Schenk (Robert) and Nicholas Shumate (Kylie); sisters: Margaret Harris, Elizabeth Moon, and Dorothy Needham; brother: Jessie Shumate.

A visitation will be held Friday, September 13, 2024, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Meadows Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Saturday, September 14, 2024 at 11:00am at Harmony Baptist Church, with Reverend Brant Callaway officiating. Interment will follow at Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery.
