Janice Allen DiStefano, age 79, of Lake Placid, Florida (formerly of Monroe) passed away on March 12, 2024 in Florence, South Carolina. She was born in Newport News, Virginia on December 6, 1944 to the late Helen Darby Allen and the late Felton Allen. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Dominic DiStefano; and brother, the late Michael Allen.

She is survived by her daughters, Tammy Moore (Philip) and Dana Sweeney (Jim), and her grandchildren, Ryan Briscoe, Darby Moore, Melanie Moore, Jarrett Briscoe, and Ansley Moore.

First and foremost, Janice was a Christian. She loved playing her piano and found comfort in the old hymns. She was also a lifelong teacher. As such, she was always eager to learn new things. She earned both her Batchelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Georgia, all while raising her two little girls. She loved Jeopardy and she always knew more of the answers than anyone else in the room. She kept a bag of Reese’s pieces next to her favorite chair and was delighted by a gift of Krystal double cheeseburgers.

Any Saturday in the Fall you could find her in front of her giant TV cheering on her beloved Georgia Bulldogs. She loved Lewis Grizzard and read every one of his books several times. She enjoyed finding bargains at thrift stores and, if her closet was any indication, she found a lot of them. She absolutely adored her Shih Tzu, Samantha, and never quite got over her death.

She was kind and very soft hearted - she cried every time the ASPCA commercial came on TV. She was a perfectionist and that showed in the many crafts and Easter dresses she made over the years. She never met a stranger and loved to talk to new people. Oh, and she LOVED Barry Manilow. Her daughters were fortunate to get to attend one of his concerts with her in 2023. Lots of fun and laughter ensued. Janice was a lot smarter, a lot braver and a lot stronger than she ever believed she was. She was tough and resilient. She will be forever missed.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 17, 2024 at Meadows Funeral Home from 1:30 – 3:00 pm. The service will follow at 3:00 pm at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with Reverend Tim Newby officiating. Interment will follow at Hill Haven Memory Gardens at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that you make a donation honoring Janice to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation (
